Objective

I have found my career and education in the field of Information Technology to be very enriching, and I intend to continue this career for many years to come, and never to stop learning. I hope that I can help your organization with the deployment and operation of cutting-edge technology, by bringing a hard-working and enthusiastic attitude, as well as my considerable experience.

Work Experience

I have had a wide variety of work experience in the IT sector, stretching back over the past ten years. In addition to the positions detailed below, I have done various work for clients on a private contract basis, setting up Linux- and BSD-based firewalls, configuring and maintaining Internet servers, and adapting Open Source software or designing and developing custom software to meet the client's needs.

2002 - present

Access Communications Co-operative Ltd., Regina, Sask.

As a member of the small Internet Admin Group, I am responsible for the maintenance and security of approximately fifty Linux-based servers and several Cisco routers around the province. This includes everything from VPN tunnel servers through web servers and mail servers to the main Cisco 7606 router that handles the several hundred megabits of Internet traffic flowing through the network.

I have been responsible for design, development, and implementation of servers and software for new Internet services, as well as for internal corporate use. In my time in this position, I have been directly responsible for the design and development of a low-cost but highly effective spam and virus filtering system able to handle over two-hundred messages per minute, a new corporate mail system using LDAP authentication, development from scratch of a simple POP-based webmail system for customer use, implementation of the Plone intranet content management system, development of new diagnostic tools used by the Internet help desk, and many other projects. I have also participated in the installation and configuration of two new Cisco routers, splitting the previously flat city-wide cablemodem network into several routed subnets, testing and deployment of several new models of cablemodems, development of a custom DHCP server to meet our specialized needs, and much more.

As one of the staff members most knowledgeable about the Internet and computer problems, I am often called upon to resolve puzzling network issues experienced by our major corporate clients, as well as to assist our help desk with solving a wide variety of complex customer issues. In my position, I am also periodically responsible for providing after-hours emergency support for any network or server problems that may arise.

2001

MarkeTel Systems Ltd., Regina, Sask.

I updated and enhanced the existing PHP-based intranet web site and its associated MySQL database. This included writing new code, rewriting portions of the existing code, and revising the database design. I also developed new software for internal use, in both PHP and Perl.

1999 - 2001

Digital MediaWorks, Regina, Sask.

In this position, I was responsible for the development of the back-end software for a variety of web sites developed for our clients, which typically involved database integration and JavaScript interaction. I also developed Java applets and Java server-side software, and performed other software development tasks for our clients. This role frequently required me to interact directly with the client, and I was often responsible for defining my own work schedule to ensure that client deadlines were met.

I also spent several weeks working on-site at SaskTel on the QuantumLynx Online (QLO) system. In this project, I worked directly with consultants from Netscape Communications Corp., as well as developers and system administrators from within SaskTel to ensure that a new release of the QLO system was ready on time for the schedule determined by SaskTel management.

In addition to my role as a developer, I was also responsible for the setup and maintenance of several Linux servers used by Digital MediaWorks, including a file server, mail server, and web server to host our development projects.

1998

Human Resources Development Canada, Saskatchewan RHQ

I provided technical support to internal users on HRDC's systems, including the Banyan VINES network, BeyondMail, and proprietary HRDC software. I participated in planning and deployment of a province-wide upgrade to Windows 95 and other upgrades necessary for Y2K. I also set up several Linux web servers, learning about Linux and network security in the process, and developed a VPN (virtual private network) solution to connect several HRDC sites securely across the Internet.

1997

QCC Communications Corporation, Saskatoon, Sask.

I worked in the SaskTel Sympatico call centre, answering technical support calls from SaskTel Internet customers, and calling back customers with unresolved problems in the evening.

1996 - 2002
(Part-time)

Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST)

I spent several years as a Lab Monitor, maintaining four computer labs and the network, as well as assisting students and the public with using the computers. Later, I served as a lab assistant for distance education COMP 120 and COMP 121 classes, and taught several Computer Education classes, including Visual Basic, HTML, and JavaScript.

Summer 1994, Summer 1996

ISM Information Systems Management Corp., Regina, Sask.

My first summer at ISM, I worked with relational databases on a variety of platforms, including RDB/VMS, IBM DB2/MVS, and DB2/2, developed a prototype interface to the databases in Visual Basic, and learned C++ to assist in the development of the final database interface. In my second summer, I was responsible for a complete redesign of the web site for ISM Saskatchewan, and the maintenance and creation of various CGI software.
